Before the room's best features were hidden by bland colors, outmoded window treatments and loads of knickknacks. Now the room really pops. The vibrant yellow tone on the walls complements the terra cotta-colored curtains and accessories. "You want your wall color to support your design, not to overpower your design," Karen advises.

The stately new bed in a rich, dark brown brings some much-needed drama to the space. The color works well with the rustic sliding doors that cover the middle shelves between the windows. Karen had carpenter Pete Burke build them to hide some of the Capsimalis' tchotchkes. The new throw rug in front of the bed continues the theme and helps provide a balance between the large, heavy furniture and the lighter-colored elements and carpeting. "When using an area rug over wall-to-wall carpeting to anchor a room, just make sure that each of your large pieces of furniture sits a little bit on the rug to create a unifying look," says Karen.
