Contemporary and Asian Styles Blended for Bedroom Update
Design on a Dime : Episode DOD-311 -- More Projects »
Tian and Yan Huang moved to the United States 12 years ago. After buying their first home they filled the rooms with the Chinese influences of their youth. Now, they're ready for a change in their master bedroom. They've recently purchased new contemporary-style furnishings and want the team to blend the two styles for an updated look.
The DilemmaKristan Cunningham and design coordinators Dave Sheinkopf and Spencer Anderson discuss the design issues at hand, including the lack of color, mismatched lighting scheme, wasted space at the foot of the bed, the bland closet doors, outdated accessories and the lack of natural light coming through the wood blinds.
The SolutionHere's how the team achieves a contemporary Asian design using color and updated decorative elements.
- The walls are painted a warm green color to act as a neutral and help counteract the dark wood furniture and ceiling beams. They paint a soft yellow rectangle in the center of each closet door to complement the straight-lined furniture and architecture.

Inexpensive molding painted in a darker color adds character and dimension to the simple cornice boxes.
The windows are updated with bamboo Roman shades and painted cornice boxes. Sheinkopf builds a cornice box out of lightweight mdf (medium density fiberboard) for each window. He applies a very pale yellow base coat then attaches molding to the face of the box for a dimensional quality. The molding is painted the same color as the closet doors.

The red-painted fire log lamp bases add just the right amount of color to either side of the bed.
To counteract the geometric furniture lines, Anderson decides to make two organic table lamps using fire logs. He strips off the bark down to the bare wood, drills a hole in either end to accommodate the electrical wire, installs the hardware and paints the wood a glossy red. A black wooden base and white barrel shade are the finishing touches.

A wood stand and fluted casing are used to transfrom a simple wall mirror.
Anderson constructs a standing mirror out of a $10 mirror from a home improvement store. He embellishes the simple frame with fluted casing and attaches it to a basic lumber frame with hinges and chain. The team constructs a cushioned bench seat to fill up the space at the foot of the bed. Sheinkopf makes a wooden frame and Cunningham finishes the top with a plywood seat wrapped with 6-inch foam, batting and fabric, all stapled to the underside. She tufts the top with fabric-covered buttons for an elegant touch. Store-bought legs finish the piece.Other elements that bring the look together include a jute floor rug at the foot of the bed and new bedding that includes two coverlets and shams and a colorful bolster pillow.A vignette in one corner of the room is comprised of the homeowners' Asian-style side table and upholstered chair.
