Hide CaptionShow CaptionRain damage has caused parts of Carolyn’s charming home to fall apart.
When Carolyn Kayne moved into her Atlanta home 10 years ago, she was shocked at the condition of the neighborhood. Not only was it crime and drug infested, a metal scrap yard was billowing smoke and toxins into the air. She decided to fight back, rallying the community to clean up the neighborhood and convincing the scrap-yard owner to sell the yard. Now, her neighborhood is a cleaner, safer place to live with new homes and apartments being built. Designer Vern Yip is going to help Carolyn make over her own home, which she neglected for all those years she was rebuilding her neighborhood.

Carolyn’s home is old and rich in charm with tall ceilings and original heart-pine floors. But, some of the old house is also falling apart. That is most evident in the living room where the once-beautiful fireplace is now in sad shape. When she purchased the home, there was a hole in the ceiling where rain poured in. This caused the fireplace column (left) to rot and the surrounding floor to disintegrate.
