Drywall over the top of the fireplace minimizes its impact for the better, and flanking it with bookshelves allows for display space of special items including family photographs. With three daughters, Chris and Arlene Fox have no time to update their '80s living room. Luckily, design student Amanda Oldroyd does. She warms the room with Arizona accent colors, creates bookshelves for either side of the fireplace and streamlines it with a drywall overlay, adds ottomans for storage/seating and includes a cool tile coffee table.
The Fox family is young, fun and energetic. Their living room doesn't reflect any of those traits, and they avoid it most of the time.
Before: A papered wall and an adjacent one covered in fake paneling have got to go, and the old window blinds need to be updated as well.
