Colorful Accents
Kitty Bartholomew: You're Home : Episode KIT-1301 -- More Projects »
Designer Michael Bowman used colorful furnishings and accessories against a neutral background to set a relaxing but elegant mood in this Seattle home. The living and dining areas are open to each other so he had to unify the two spaces with similar colors. His palette was inspired by the rainbow of hues in the homeowners' artwork over the buffett and fireplace. The red sofa fabric is balanced with the gray fabric on the two side chairs. The Chinese coin pattern adds depth to the matte background. A smaller pattern of the same fabric is found on sofa's throw pillows.
The dining space echoes the same bold colors, yet with an introduction of a few new ones like aqua and purple. The buffett is painted aqua and helps to lighten the palette. The area rug features a mixture of hues, like red, blue and purple. Bowman says the trick to using so many colors is to repeat a fraction of them in each room for consistency. The aqua color is found again in the office off the kitchen and a lighter version of the purple is seen on the hallway leading into the kitchen.
Off the living room, a hallway leading into the master bedroom is painted red. Artwork over the bed influences the softer palette. The bedding is neutral with punches of red on the piping and pillows; a kimono over the dresser is accented with red.
