Industrial designers Duane Smith and Stefane Barbeau moved to Boston to be part of its budding design scene. They bought a tiny fixer-upper and set out to create their own urban cottage. They began by removing the existing staircase, opening the stairwell up to natural light.
The homeowners chose to put the curtains out in front of the bay windows, essentially creating the feel of another room. On the first floor, they built in a window seat that also provides storage for their shoes. Upstairs in the bedroom, they carved out a private seating area using the same curtain arrangement.
