Buying Windows

Smart Design : Episode SDN-405 -- More Projects »
When it comes to windows, the possibilities are endless. Differences in light, ventilation, function and view are only a few of the factors to consider when choosing them. Stuart Rosenthal describes several popular styles:

The most popular type is a double-hung window, which generally means the bottom and top operate verses a single-hung window where only the bottom operates while the top is stationary.

Casement windows are also very popular. Two windows that crank out work nicely for a wider opening for a lot of ventilation and more of a view without a sash bar down the center. Sliding casement options are better where you don't want to obstruct the exterior such as a window open onto a porch.

  • Double- or triple-paned windows create more of a thermal barrier than single-paned options, saving money in energy efficiency. The glass is available with a special reflective coating that drastically slows down the fading of furniture and rugs. It also reflects the radiant heat out in the summer and in during winter, helping to more effectively cool or heat your home.

  • Look for self-cleaning glass that has a coating on the outside so it just needs to be sprayed with a light mist of water. The glass sheets the water off and doesn't leave water marks, which are what usually leaves dirt behind.

For a little color and drama in a window, use a plant hanger to suspend a stained glass panel just inside the window sill.

Control light, add privacy and lots of interest to a room by applying window film designs to a plain sheet of clean glass. Plain UV film can also offer protection when used in the same manner.
