Tools and Materials:
3 new or salvaged solid-core doors
3 plastic planter boxes
6 heavy-duty hinges
3 mirror panels
Brad nailer and 2-1/2” finish nails
sander and sandpaper
paint stripper, paintbrushes and rags
spray bottle and a plastic funnel
distilled water
nitric acid (**Use precaution with nitric acid, wear protective goggles, gloves and work in a ventilated area**)
crackle paint
heavy-duty super glue
caulking gun and a clear caulk
glass cutter
drywall square, speed square and a level
screw gun
pocket-hole jig
tape measure
safety glasses, dust mask and a rubber gloves
Steps:
1.Cut the pieces of mirror to the size of the top panel of the doors. Dry fit them to make sure they will be the right size.
2. Gently sand the protective surface off of the back of the mirrors to expose the silvering. Wear a dust mask while sanding.
3. Remove additional surface from the back of the mirrors with paint stripper. For decorative purposes, the surface can look a little patchy. Rinse the mirrors several times with water and let it dry.
4. Use a plastic funnel and pour the nitric acid in to a spray bottle.
**When working with nitric acid, use extra precaution. Wear plastic gloves, protective goggles and work in a well-ventilated area. NEVER let nitric acid come in contact with any metal surfaces or your skin. Dispose of the chemicals properly. Read all labels associated with the acid carefully and follow the provided instructions**
5. Spritz the back of the mirrors with the nitric acid and let sit for 10 minutes (or longer depending on the look you’re going for).
6. Let the mirrors dry, then rinse with water and then let them dry again.
7. Sand the doors to expose old layers of paint. If the doors are new, paint them then sand or strip them to achieve the desired effect. Use crackle paint to give the doors an aged look. By using long brushstrokes and painting with the grain you will get the best crackled look. Allow the doors to dry completely.
8. Hinge the doors in an accordion fashion using the heavy-duty door hinges.
9. Attach the planters to the door panels underneath the mirror panels. Install the mirrors into the door panels with heavy-duty super glue and clear caulk around the edges to ensure the mirror will stay in place.
