AfterHost Joan Steffend and designer Nadia Ramirez give an 11-year-old boy a sporty new bedroom by concentrating on storage with a fun-filled theme inspired by his passion for skateboarding.
- The red walls are painted a dark blue with an accent of yellow on the chair rail.
- The bed is repositioned under the window and dressed with denim bedding and a new custom headboard made from old skateboards.
- The window treatment consists of bright orange vinyl fabric used to make rainwear attached to roller shades for a bold splash of color.
- The existing desk is moved to the head of the bed to alleviate the need for a nightstand. A sport's theme area rug adds color to the floor.
- A store-bought wooden storage unit is coated with a bright red paint that has a brilliant sheen resembling car paint. Oversize casters added to the bottom make it a mobile. Galvanized buckets keep the boy's collections organized.
- On the wall, another old skateboard is turned into a coat rack and below a galvanized trash bin holds hockey sticks and baseball bats.
- The '50s glass globe ceiling light is replaced with a hubcap converted into a unique shade.
Skateboard Décor
- Nail five old skateboards to a piece of plywood or old headboard and attach to bed frame.
Vinyl Roller Shades
Steps:
- Cut vinyl material and dowel rod to fit the width of the window.
- Staple one end of the vinyl to the dowel rod.
- Fold up the end about two inches and secure with grommets.
- Insert a small dowel rod into the pocket to stabilize the edge.
