AfterHost Joan Steffend and designer Susie Burke update a young boy's room using an Americana theme with a nautical influence.
- A strip of wallpaper bearing red and white stars is applied across the top of the room. The lower part of the walls is painted a navy blue. The seam where the paint and wallpaper meet is hidden with white trim.
- The bunk bed is replaced with a twin-size bed with a trundle underneath. The headboard is painted white and embellished with red-painted wooden stars across the top. The footboard is created out of two table legs and the leaf from a drop-leaf table. A king-size duvet is cut in half and finished with a chambray sheet trim to make two twin-size bed covers.
- Hand-towel hooks are used to hang the window valance.
- The leftover dish towels are applied to the dresser fronts with spray adhesive, stapled to the back and sealed with polyurethane.
- A padded mirror frame is created out of plywood, batting and fabric. Buttons hide the staples and seams. White hooks are added to the bottom.
- A desk is constructed out of the other half of the drop-leaf table and mounted perpendicular to the bed with L-brackets.
- Two windows are repurposed into a chalkboard and message board.
- A reading nook on the floor is comprised of a large red pillow and a lap desk created out of an old medicine cabinet.
Fabric Drawer Fronts
Steps:
- Cut fabric 2" larger than drawer fronts.
- Attach fabric with spray adhesive.
- Secure the fabric to the back of the drawer fronts with staples. Trim excess.
- Seal with polyurethane.
