Better Food for Kids: Your Essential Guide to Nutrition for all Children from Age 2 to 6

Canadian dieticians Joanne Saab and Daina Kalnins, who work at the renowned Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, have come out with their second book, Better Food for Kids, which follows their debut with Better Baby Food.

The second book focuses on food for children ages 2 to 6, when they have more teeth to chew with and are developing their food tastes.

The book does a good job at explaining why children need diets that are rich with elements such as fiber and iron. It also teaches why children shouldn't have a lot of juice, and why staying away from the television at mealtimes will prevent obesity. More than half the book focuses on recipes that make appealing presentations of things unappealing to children, such as vegetables.

Like many diet books, however, there are myriad charts explaining how many grams of this or that a child must have each day, along with specific serving sizes. A harried parent is not going to take the time to perform these measurements in front of a hungry, whining child.

But the book gives helpful pointers to suggest which kinds of food in general the kids should be eating at meal and snack times, a valuable guide amid the intensive advertising for the high-fat, high-sugar, no-fiber stuff that retailers call food.
