Before and After: Brownstone Living/Dining Room Redesign
Decorating Cents : Episode DCT-1913 -- More Projects »
This Brooklyn brownstone is beautiful with its 13-foot ceilings and original mahogany woodwork but the furnishings in the living and dining rooms are in need of an interior redesign. Mindy Greenberg and Lisa Skelley discuss the design dilemmas:- Immediately upon entering the room, the white sofa blocks the traffic pattern into the living area and the dining table to the right doesn't help direct guests through the space.
- The armoire, picture frames, fireplace mantel and swords create too many hard edges on the wall opposite the sofas.
Here's how they create a more comfortable living environment:- The sofas are angled in the space and placed end to end to open up the living room. A tall corner cabinet and round side table complete the design.
- To counteract the hard lines, they move the armoire into a far corner away from the fireplace, situate a soft chair near the mantel and place the swords up high on the dining room wall for visual interest.
- To further complement the new design, they swap the two rugs for a better fit and break up the tall mirror over the fireplace with a large piece of artwork.
