AfterWhen it comes to their new living room, Cheryl and Jason need a space that doubles for entertaining and relaxing. Cheryl wants a beach chic space that has hidden storage and extra seating, while Jason's main concern is a plasma TV. Kenneth creates a design plan to keep them both happy using casual, organic materials, drapes to soften the stairwell, built-in cabinets for storage and a plasma TV to go over the fireplace.
By hanging the television over the fireplace, Kenneth is able to combine the two competing focal points so that the furniture arrangement can be simplified. This leaves room for cabinetry on either side to house the electrical components. The cabinetry is made out of medium-density fiberboard covered in wood veneer — a less costly alternative to solid wood. Since the lower cabinets house the speakers, fabric is used in the doors. The homeowners took part in the demolition of the brick around the fireplace, replacing it with blue-tinged slate.
The opposite wall is balanced with a pair of geometric-shaped bookcases and a bold, beach-themed art piece made by the homeowners. A curtain wall separates the room from the stairwell, making the space feel more intimate. While Cheryl and Jason are chiefly concerned with comfort, they also want to be able to entertain guests so Kenneth includes a four-piece ottoman set that can be pulled apart and used for extra seating. Two of the cubes are equipped with a cushioned flip-top that reveals extra storage inside.
