Project designed by Ellie Joos and Nadia Fobert.
Materials and Tools
3-1/2 yards of 7/8-inch wide, single face satin ribbon
2-1/2 yards of violet petal with pearl center garland in two colors
28 inches of 5/8-inch wide single face satin ribbon
2-1/2 yards of 3/8-inch wide feather edge satin ribbon
2- 1/2 yards of rosebud garland
1-2/3 yards of rosebud garland in coordinating color
two packages of pre-made small ribbon rosebud
four packages of pre-made medium ribbon roses
18-inch diameter circle of foam core
68, size two plastic coated diapers
one paper towel tube, cut seven inches long
clear packing tape
double- sided tape
one small toy for cake topper
assorted small baby items - washcloths, bibs, toys, spoons, pacifiers
hot glue gun
Steps:
1. Glue a paper towel tube to the center the of the foam core.
2. Set aside 14 diapers for the top tier of the cake.
3. Tightly wrap the remaining diapers around the base of the tube, opening each and securing each end with a small piece of packing tape. Overlap the last five diapers to hide the colorful band.
4. Wrap the bottom tier with one long length of packing tape.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 with the 14 remaining diapers to create the top tier. Place the top tier on top of the bottom tier.
6. Using double-sided tape, adhere 7/8-inch wide satin ribbon to the bottom and top edge of the bottom tier and bottom edge of the top tier.
7. Adhere the 5/8-inch wide ribbon to the top edge of the top tier.
8. Cut the violet petal garlands into 60-inch lengths and 30-inch lengths and attach them to the 7/8-inch wide ribbon on the bottom edge of the bottom tier. Repeat with the 30-inch lengths on the bottom edge of the top tier.
9. Cut the 3/8-inch wide feather edge satin ribbons into two lengths and adhere them to the center of the wide ribbons on the top edge of each tier.
10. Adhere the 60-inch length of rosebud garland to the top edge of the bottom tier, allowing the rosebuds to "droop," creating a scalloped design.
11. Adhere the remaining 60-inch length of the rosebud garland along the top edge of the bottom tier to the center of the feather edge satin ribbon. Repeat with the remaining garland to top edge of the top tier.
12. Tuck small baby items into the diapers to create "candles" and add the topper to the cake.
13. Add bunches of pre-made ribbon flowers to further decorate.
