Materials and Tools:
four or more fabric pieces (scraps)
ribbons, trims, yarns etc.
black sheer binding
coat hanger
pins
sewing notions
Steps:
1. Cut out a square of fabric for the center section of the pillow.
2. Cut out two fabric pieces for the pillow sides to frame the center square. Stitch the right sides together.
3. Cut out two fabric pieces for the top and bottom pillow section. Stitch right sides together.
4. Cut the pillow back from either the same fabrics or complementary fabrics.
5. To make the pillow fringe, gather all the trims, yarns, ribbons etc., using a minimum of five or six trims to form a ribbon collage.
6. Cut and reshape a coat hanger into a U-shaped harp tool.
7. Join all the ribbon strands together and tie to one corner of the U-shaped tool. Loosely wrap the ribbon collage across the U-shaped tool.
8. Place black sheer seam binding on top of ribbons and stitch down the center. The binding prevents the sewing machine presser foot from getting caught in the ribbon loops and creates a stitching surface (flange) to attach the fringe to the fabric.
9. Pull the U-shaped tool so that the ribbons are drawn up side by side. Continue wrapping ribbons across the U-shaped tool and resume stitching the black binding onto the ribbon collage until the desired fringe length is achieved.
10. Clip the loops for a fluffy appearance or leave ribbon collage looped if preferred.
