Design experts are on hand in the showrooms to help consumers make decisions on everything from cabinetry to tile.

With over 200,000 square feet of display space, the Architects and Designers Building in New York City is one of the premier kitchen and bath design centers in the country. The building is open to the public and includes high-style showrooms featuring cabinetry, tile, fixtures and faucets, in addition to full-scale kitchen and bath displays. HGTV visited six of the showrooms in conjunction with the 2003 Kitchen/Bath Industry Show to bring you some of the trend-setting furnishings and materials that may soon make their way into mainstream kitchen and bath designs.

Sistema ES by Italian designers Paolo Lucci and Roberto Orlandini

Sistema ES is the first completely freestanding kitchen, eliminating the need for walls to hang cabinets and allowing it to be placed anywhere in the home provided there is plumbing and power available in the floor. The gentle S-curve design signals a natural, organic look and defines a new style for today's kitchens. The large-scale set of double drawers helps to retain the fluidity of the design.

The four-foot drawers provide plenty of storage within easy reach.

The Sistema ES is also ushering in a new evolution of appliances with a steam oven with its own water reservoir and plate-warming drawer.

Viva by Pininfarina

Function meets cutting-edge design in this contemporary kitchen with retro flair. The lines of both the upper and lower cabinets follow a subtle radius for a streamlined look. The upper wall unit has a pneumatic piston door lift system, which opens up and out of the way to create an "obstruction-free" work zone. A stainless steel backsplash, integrated sink and bullnose trim with a dripless edge create a seamless look.

The glass cabinet doors above the sink are both mirrored and tinted for a sleek, contemporary effect. A built-in plate-drying rack and reservoir makes it possible to set wet dishes away and out of sight.

Artcraft Cabinetry

The Artcraft kitchen in the Bilotta showroom has a sculptural quality with an overhead cabinet featuring a strong radius on the front. The cabinet opens up towards the ceiling, allowing for free range of movement below. Aluminum is a material now being used for kitchen applications. It's a lighter weight alloy and although slight, the color differential between it and the stainless steel makes for a striking contrast.

Also in the Bilotta showroom is an arts-and-crafts period kitchen filled with modern conveniences and high-end appliances. The simplicity of the style is evident through the straight lines and absence of ornate moldings and intricate details--as expected with this style, each piece is an integral and functional part of the design.

A tall column next to the refrigerator looks to be purely decorative when shut but is actually pull-out storage perfect for cans and spices.

Rutt Cabinetry - Florentine

The Bilotta team has taken sanctuary to the extreme in this luxurious space. The bathtub mimics a four-poster bed with raised side panels, feet and four columns. A beveled glass mirror, silky fabric on the ceiling and crystal chandelier bring an elegant sophistication to the elegant room.

In contrast to the the traditional look of the tub surround, a pair of glass sinks are poised on the countertop presenting an interesting mix of materials and styles.

The azure floor is blue Macuba quartz from Brazil. This material features a graceful water pattern, which is especially suited to the space.

Artistic Tile

Artistic Tile specializes in luxury stone and tile products, especially elements that embody a handcrafted quality.

This Tunisian limestone mosaic tile is from the same quarries used 2,000 years ago to produce similar mosaics for the Roman empire. The designs have been tweaked just slightly for the modern homeowner and are available in patterns like herringbone, tweed and basket weave.

Onyx, a material once considered too fragile for design applications, is an exotic material formed from the stalactites of caves. The material contains a natural patterning and is available in a variety of colors.

Metal and glass are two common materials now being used to tile modern bathroom walls and floors. Various minerals are baked onto the back to form a distinctive pattern on each tile.

This Venetian glass tile offers customization at its finest with a 24-karat gold leaf backing. It's available in a variety of colors through the use of gem-colored glass with silver or gold leaf on the back.
