Using the vibrant colors of yellow and black, designer Richard Anderson spices up a lackluster kitchen with enough culinary details to whet any chef's appetite.

  • A bright yellow glaze is dabbed onto the walls with a rag and an aging glaze is rubbed onto the cabinets.
  • A colorful wallpaper border is applied above the tile and set off with black- painted trim.
  • The cabinets are embellished with black-and-white checked wallpaper. Tiny rolling pins, normally used as recipe holders, are used as cabinet hardware.
  • A piece of plywood and plant brackets combine for an inventive pot rack. A dowel rod is inserted into the plant brackets and cup hooks are inserted into the rod for a place to hang pots.
  • Quarter-round molding is attached inside the window area to support three glass shelves.
  • A cabinet door from a salvage store is attached to the face of the molding surrounding the recess in the wall. Chalkboard paint is sprayed on the lower half for a place to write grocery lists.
  • A towel holder is created by mounting a rolling pin onto plant brackets then attaching the brackets to the wall with screws.
  • A colander is fashioned into a hanging light fixture. A hole is cut in the bottom and a bulb is inserted and attached to a lamp kit. A fabric strip is sewed together to create a cover for the chain.
  • Accessories include a plaster chef figure picked up at a restaurant, storage baskets and a mirror placed over the counter.
