This arrangement has an added element of fun that plays visual games with what you think you see: the floral foam "pebbles," when threaded onto snake grass stems, look identical to stone pebbles. Use these foam pebbles only as an optional extra - their absence won't detract from the arrangement.
Flowers and Foliage
2 stems orange spray roses
1 bunch bear grass
1 bunch snake grass
5 orange calla lilies
wide, shallow column container (5 inches high, 12 inches wide)
1 pin holder
foam pebbles (optional)
Alliums or nerines (for calla lilies); tracheliums or peonies (for roses); thin bamboo (for snake grass); lily grass or china grass (for bear grass)
How to Arrange
Place a pin holder at the back of the container. Arrange the tall calla lilies first to create a high focal point: trim the stems and press them into the middle of the pin holder so they stand at slightly different heights.
Trim the rose stems so that the sprays are slightly shorter than the lowest calla lily. Snip off a few single stems and reserve them. Arrange the main rose stems at the front of the pin holder, then fill any obvious gaps with the single stems.
Place the end of each snake grass stem behind the lilies in the back of the pin holder. If you are using soaked foam pebbles, thread them onto the snake grass stems. Bend the stems once or twice in the center and place the thin top end back on the pin holder or against the edge of the container to create a spreading effect from the center of the arrangement.
Divide the bear grass into bunches of 5 or 6 stems, bind them with elastic bands and place them around the arrangement on the pin holder to pull the design together. Scatter two handfuls of black pebbles in the container to hide the pin holder and add enough water to cover the bases of the stems.
This arrangment will last for three to five days if you refresh the water.
It's easiest to thread these foam pebbles onto the stems of the snake grass after soaking them briefly in water.
