Ultimate Slumber Party
Smart Solutions : Episode SSL-833 -- More Projects »
Creativity expert Courtney Watkins tells how to put together a night to remember for the children.
- One of the big problems with a slumber party is where to put the sleeping bags. Here's a little game to eliminate that problem: When the children first arrive, have them pick a card with a symbol on it (that you have made beforehand). Tell them to match their symbol to the one hanging on the wall where their sleeping bag will go (figure A).
- When the child is dropped off, have the parent or caregiver sign a sheet with their name and an emergency telephone number on it.
- Set up an art table to keep everyone busy until all the children arrive (figure B).
- For first-time slumber party goers, take them on a tour and show them where the bathroom is, where the sleeping room is, and where the parents will be sleeping.
- S'mores are the ultimate snack. To create a "campfire," attach hot-colored crepe paper streamers to a fan and have the kids gather around (figure C). Put together the s'mores in the kitchen, popping the graham crackers, chocolate squares and marshmallows in the microwave.
- Here is a list of games that are sure to keep the kids busy all night:
Scavenger Hunt--Print the birthday childs name on a paper bag. Have the children find something in the yard that begins with each letter of the name.
Flashlight Tag--Instead of chasing each other, let children tag each other with inexpensive flashlights that they can take home as party gifts.
Quiet Corner--Have a doodle box full of art supplies and stickers for children who want to get away from the hectic activities.
Chin Again Puppets--This is a good wind-down game. Just draw three dots on each child's chin and cover their eyes with a scarf. Have them lie upside down on the couch and animate their "puppets."(figure D).
