1-3/8 yard medium light log fabric
2 yard medium dark log fabric
2-1/3 yard dark log fabric
1-1/4 yard first border fabric
3/4 yard second border fabric
1 yard binding fabric
ruler, rotary cutter and mat
Steps:
1. Make templates of the five sizes of the template for the flower marking the straight of grain on the templates. Cut 80 of each color of A. Cut 20 of each color of the other four templates. Be sure to position the templates on the fabric so that the straight line is on the straight of grain of the fabric. Fold these flowers in half on the long straight line and iron.
2. To make the nine patch for the center of the square, cut a piece of center fabric that is 2-1/2 inches, a light log piece of fabric that is 2-1/2 inches and a light log piece of fabric that is 1-1/2 inches. Sew into a unit of log, center and log. Press seams toward the logs. Then cut into 2-1/2 inch units. Make 20.
3. Cut a light log strip 2-1/2 inches and a first corner strip 2-1/2 inches and a second corner 1-1/2 inches. Sew into a unit of first corner, light log and second corner, pressing seams toward log fabric. Cut into 20 units measuring 2-1/4 inches. Add to left side of middle. Then make another unit of second corner of 2-1/2 inches, light log of 2-1/2 inches and first corner of 1-1/2 inches. Cut into 2-1/4-inch pieces. Sew to right side of middle. Press these seams toward the newly added units. Make 20 total.
4. Now pin an "A" first and second flower color to lower corners being sure the marked point is toward the center of the block. Pin a "B" first and second flower color to the upper corners being sure the marked points are pointing down on the block.
Also be sure the first color flowers are on opposite corners and the second color flowers are on opposite corners.
5. With the second log strip of six inches, cut 20 three-inch pieces and 20 1-1/2-inch pieces. Sew three-inch piece to top and 1-1/2 inches to the bottom. Press seams toward log. Make units for sides of three-inch first corner, 5-1/2-inch medium light log, 1-1/2-inch second corner. Cut into 2-1/4-inch pieces and add to left side.
Then do another side of three-inch second corner, 5-1/2-inch medium light log and 1-1/2-inch first corner. Cut into 20 2-1/4-inch pieces. Sew to right side. Press seams toward new logs.
6. Pin on "A" flowers following the color scheme and pin at bottom and marked point toward center. Next pin "C" flowers to top corners following color scheme and marked point pointing down.
7. With medium dark, 9-1/2 inch-log cut 20 piece 3-1/4-inch pieces and 20 1-1/2-inch pieces. Sew wide strip to top and narrow strip to bottom. Press seam toward new log.
Press seams toward log fabric. Cut into 2-1/4-inch pieces and add to left side. Make a unit of 3-1/4-inch second corner fabric, nine-inch medium log fabric and 1-1/2-inch first corner fabric pressing seam toward log fabric. Cut into 2-1/4-inch pieces and add to right side. Press seam toward new log.
9. Pin "A" flowers to the bottom following the color scheme. Then pin "D" flowers to upper corners following color scheme. Continue to follow the plan of A template markings pointing toward center and larger template markings pointing down.
10. Cut a 13-inch dark log fabric strip into 20 3-1/2-inch pieces and 20 1-1/2-inch pieces. Sew wide to top and narrow to bottom. Press seams toward log fabric.
11. Make a unit of 3-1/2-inch first corner fabric, 12-3/4-inch dark log fabric, 1-1/2-inch second corner fabric. Press seam toward log fabric. Cut into 2-1/4-inch pieces and add to left side. Make another unit of 3-1/2-inch second corner fabric, 12-3/4-inch dark log fabric and 1-1/2-inch first corner fabric. Press seam toward log fabric. Cut into 20 2-1/4-inch pieces and add to left side.
13. Lay out blocks. Top and bottom now become sides. Sew 16, 1/2" x 2-1/2" pieces into rows of sashing, block, sashing — making five sashing strips and four blocks. Make five of these rows.
14. Sew sashing strips of 16, 3/4" to 2-1/2" x 2 1/2" corners consisting of corner, sashing, corner — making a row of five corners and four sashings. Make six of these rows.
15. From a 12-1/2-inch first border fabric strip cut 10 2-1/2-inch fabric pieces for pieced sides. From first border fabric cut 36 squares measuring 2-1/2 inches for top, bottom and sides. From a 12-3/4" wide strip of first border fabric, cut eight pieces measuring 2-1/2" for top and bottom. From corner fabric cut 36 squares measuring 2-1/2 inches. For sides sew two long units of border square, corner square, border, corner square, border square, corner square, border, corner square, border square, corner square, border, corner square, border square, corner square, border, corner square, border square, corners square, border, corner square and border square. Sew to each side. For top and bottom sew border square, border square, corner square, border, corner square, border square, corner square, border, corner square, border square, corner square, border, corner square, border square, corner square, border, corner square, border square and border square. Sew to top and bottom.
16. Sew 2-1/2-inch strips of outer border together with a bias seam. Measure through center of quilt vertically and cut two pieces of border this length. Sew to each side. Then measure horizontally through center of quilt, cut two pieces this length and sew to top and bottom.
