Knitty Gritty : Episode DKNG-211 -- More Projects »
Jacquard knitting requires you to work the knit stitches in one color and the purl stitches in the other. To keep a good rhythm to her knitting, Bigham prefers to knit with both hands, using the thrown method for the knit stitches (right hand) and the continental method for the purl stitches (left hand). Not everyone can knit with both methods, however, so you may want to experiment to find your most comfortable method.

This garment features a star on the front, knit with the CC on the MC side and the MC on the CC side. We've included a downloadable chart, but you may prefer to create your own design.

Front
Using tubular cast on, CO 150 (170, 190, 210, 230) sts with MC. Pick up and hold CC with MC (figure A).
Row 1 (RS): *With both yarns in back, K1 in MC, with both yarns in front, p1 in CC, repeat from * across row. Half of the stitches will be in MC and half will be in CC. Twist yarns together at edges.
Row 2: *With both yarns in back, k1 in CC, with both yarns in front, p1 in MC, repeat from * across row (figure B).
Repeat rows 1 and 2 until work measures 6 (7, 71/2, 9, 91/2)" ending on WS row.
Next two (RS): Work as in Row 1 across 50 (60, 70, 80, 90) sts. Place a stitch marker. Work first row of chart across next 50 sts. Place a stitch marker. Work as in Row 1 across remaining 50 (60, 70, 80, 90) sts.
Next Row: Work as in Row 2 across 50 (60, 70, 80, 90) sts. Place a stitch marker.
Work second row of graph across next 50 sts. Place a stitch marker. Work as in Row 2 across remaining 50 (60, 70, 80, 90) sts.
Continue to work center 50 sts following graph until complete. Work Rows 1 and 2 until work measures 13 (131/2, 14, 141/2, 15)" from beginning.

Back
Work as for Front from * to **, omitting color chart.

Knit Bit: A dressmaker's board has the perfect grid lines for blocking your knit pieces. Lay your project down flat, match up the edges to the grid lines, pin it right through the board, spray it down with lukewarm water and let it dry overnight.
