In 2001, University of Nebraska graduate student Melissa Jurgena embarked on a one-year quest to unravel the history of a 19th century quilt.

Through means of technology and travel, she tracked down the quilt maker's relatives and rare family treasures including photos of the quilt maker, her family bible and personal diaries.

Ultimately, she uncovered a photo of the quiltmaker Jane Blair, also a dressmaker. Through research, Jurgena concluded that Blair used scraps of dress fabric to make the quilt and noted the name of the customer who commissioned the dresses on each of the different blocks of the quilt.
