This Smurfy figurine is awfully generous.

This guy's quite a bit larger than the one above.
Andrew Somer collects these little blue, three-apple-high figurines that were popular in the 1980s. Though they are long gone from the TV lineup, this collector has hardly forgotten the characters. What began with one Smurf figurine exploded into nearly 5,000 pieces. From figurines and T-shirts to Smurf trains, all line the walls and floor of his basement.

With 21 years of collecting Papa Smurfs, Smurfettes and Brainy Smurfs, he still remembers his very first piece.

Here are some quick tips on how to start your own collection:

  • Smurf Christmas items manufactured in the 1980s in Brussels are very collectible. A Peyo Smurf with its head inside a Christmas wreath is worth anywhere from $100 to $225.

  • A rare find is a Smurf castle that was made in Europe in the late 1970s and only produced in limited quantities. A castle in fair condition recently sold for $1,800!
