Whether you are taking a family photo at home or going to a professional photography studio, use these great tips for taking the perfect family photo.
- The first step is to determine where your finished family photo will hang. Is the room formal or informal? If the room is informal, then everyone should dress casually. If the room is formal, then the family should dress up.
- Clothing is an important consideration for any family photo. Make sure that the clothing is coordinated in both style and color. Choose a common color for all family members to wear, and avoid patterns because they will clash when grouped together. As a rule, black makes people look much thinner on camera.
- Lay out each family member's clothing on a bed and view as a group to catch anything that might clash.
- It's a good idea to always dress as though you will be in a full-length shot ... no dirty shoes!
- Make sure everyone's hair is groomed and neat, especially the children. Do not overdo your hairstyle. For women, it is better to go a little heavier on makeup because light washes out facial color.
- Clothing should be kept neat and wrinkle-free before the photo shoot. If you are visiting a professional studio, bring in clothing on a hanger to prevent wrinkles.
- Posing family members can be a bit tricky. Poses are usually determined by the number of people in the photo and whether the photo is formal or informal in style.
- For an informal photo, family members can be grouped sitting on the floor or in an outdoor setting. A more formal look is to have family members standing in a staggered fashion.
