New Products...Sort Of Carol Duvall Show : Episode CDS-1730 -- More Projects » By Carol Duvall
Yes, we talked about products today...but not exactly. Today we showed examples of some of the various kits that some of the craft-clubs-by-mail send out to their members each month or every other month. Some are really new, others have been in existence for some time, and others will no doubt be entering the scene sooner rather than later. The clubs currently seem to be growing in popularity for a number of reasons, one of which, of course, is that even today, not every crafter has a craft store within a reasonable distance. When you belong to a club, the products to make a particular project are delivered right to your door. Obviously, even crafters who do have a big craft store nearby like the idea of having craft ideas and the supplies delivered, because many of them are signing up.
First on our list of clubs to talk about is Club Scrap, which, as its name suggests, specializes in ideas and materials for scrapbookers and card makers. Mailings go out monthly, and you can subscribe for as short a time as 3 months if you want to test the waters first. On the first of every month, they mail out their familiar pizza box full of all the scrapbooking materials you will need for their suggested projects. In addition to the materials, there are complete step by step instructions as well as photographs. There is a newsletter that frequently contains photographs of some of the things other subscribers have accomplished with the items in past Club Scrap boxes, and there is always the Internet for you to ask questions, share ideas and comments, and yes, you can order extra supplies as well as return anything you dont want.
Next up is The Scrap Pack, which also specializes in scrapbooking projects and supplies. They offer 2-, 6- or 12-month subscriptions. Each monthly kit focuses on a different technique and includes any special supplies or tools that you need to try that technique. For an additional fee, they include a gadget and glue of the month, which you can choose to include or not. They too have a newsletter, complete instructions with photographs, other ideas for using your tools and supplies, other members contributions, and the advantage of being able to see projects and supplies on their website.
Not all the clubs are devoted to scrapbooking. There is also The Altered Book Club. Their mailings are every other month and they too offer a newsletter, complete directions for different suggested techniques as well as a choice of a 6-month or 1-year subscription. With the supplies and ideas they offer, they also suggest that scrapbookers, card makers and any crafter who loves working with paper and ephemera might love to have their goodie box arriving at their door step.
And for the rubber stampers in the crowd who know that one can never have too many rubber stamps, there is the International Stamp-A-Month Club. This club has a card-making project each month, and their selections come with the items you need, with the exception of glue and scissors and such, to make that particular card. They also offer an alternate version of the selected card. Also, if you already own the stamp they have selected, you can pick an alternate on the Internet. The choices are many since they have them from a number of different companies. This is one club that actually has a bricks and mortar store.
And then there is a really fun one for kids. From Creative Kids at Home there are bi-monthly craft packages designed for the 4- to 10-year-old set. They too have a project per package with all of the supplies and instructions needed for that particular project, but many of them will also include extra materials so the youngster can go on to make his or her own version. Every package has a picture on the outside that hints at the project, plus a card and extra surprise are included for the childs birthday. What a great gift to send to a youngster...or for a grandparent to purchase and have on hand for when the youngsters come visiting.
