Metal Artisan Tiles

Walker works with bronze, brass and aluminum and creates highly stylized tiles that can be customized for specific projects and clients. He begins with a soft metal blank. He carves his design into the blank, designing as he goes. He has to carefully keep all his edges to a precise seven-degree angle for the master to transfer properly once it has been sent to the foundry. At the foundry, they press the master into sand and then pour molten metal into the formed sand. After cooling, the sand is literally beaten until it loosens enough to retrieve the newly formed tile.

Walker then brings the tile back to the studio and makes it a finished piece of art. He will sharpen the design by doing additional carving to make sure the image is up to par. He buffs rough spots off the edges, sands out anything on the design that needs refining, shines the piece, and adds finish by either oxidizing or adding patina until he has created the final art work.

These tiles can be used to include an artistic touch to any project that normal tiles can be used for. They have added art into elegant kitchens, sophisticated bathrooms and mosaic tabletops. Walker has also begun to expand his work into larger pieces that he creates as they are commissioned. Randy really enjoys the freedom of his work and doing something that not many people have discovered yet.
