Project by Kristin Dunn from Alameda, Calif.

While studying book binding in college, Kristin discovered book art and fell in love with the medium. In this project, she shares a stylish journal with its own slipcover.

Materials:

1/8" bookboard
1 mm thick bookboard
glue
brush
scissors
utility knife
metal ruler
drawing paper for interior pages
linen thread
needle
beeswax
awl
leather for spine
decorative paper for covers
toothpicks
pressing board
bricks or heavy weights
wax paper

Steps:

1. To make the book block: Cut pages. Fold and crease each page. Collate into signatures (groups of folded pages). Measure and punch holes in signatures.

2. Cut thread and wax it. Stitch signatures; then glue up spine and press.

3. To make the case: Measure book block and determine size of cover boards and spine. Cut two cover boards, a thin board with recessed area and spine.

4. Cut leather/fabric and paper. Glue spine board to leather/fabric. Glue cover boards to leather/fabric.

5. Cover thin board with paper. Place background paper on cover board (this will show through the window cut out of thin board and the toothpicks will be glued on top of it).

6. Glue thin boards to cover boards. Design pattern of toothpick design. Cut toothpicks and glue in place into recessed window on cover. Press under weight.

7. Glue the front end sheet of book block. Place in proper place on inside cover. Glue back end sheet. Close book on end sheet and check that everything is lined up. Smooth out end sheets. Press overnight.

8. To make the slipcover: Measure finished journal. Determine and cut the board pieces for the slipcover, including one thin board for spine of box with rectangle cutout to create recess for date or title.

9. Glue liner paper onto boards. Press. Cut out square window for side of slipcover. Glue pieces together. Press. Cut paper. Cover box with paper.

10. Where recessed rectangle is on spine, use bone folder to define that shape. Write or print title or date. Glue onto spine in recessed area. Press overnight.
