It's always the same...so many books, so little time...but we do what we can in the time we have to give you at least a peek at some of those that have arrived in the bookstores (and some craft stores) most recently...

The first two books are big ones...so big, in fact, that they actually contain all the pages from six previously published hardcover craft books that each dealt with one specific subject. Now you get six for one in The Encyclopedia of Craft Projects in an Afternoon (mosaics, picture frames, wire jewelry, greeting cards, glass painting and stained glass) and The Encyclopedia of Craft Projects for the First Time (beading, candlemaking, soapmaking, scrapbooking, polymer clay and rubber stamping). Both are published by Main Street Publishers...and both might be a good investment if you just can't make up your mind!

For those of you who are totally devoted to stenciling, as well as those of you who have not really gotten into stenciling, a copy of The Complete Stenciling Handbook by Sandra Buckingham might be just the answer for you. The book is big and clean looking with excellent photographs, along with detailed instructions and general information pertaining to stenciling. If you've not yet pursued the subject, you might be as surprised as I was to discover how many different types of stenciling there are and how many different surfaces can be stenciled on. The book tells you what and how. Published by Firefly Books Ltd.

Add to the list of books on the subject of card making Creating Greeting Cards with Glass Painting Techniques by Joan Dale. If you've ever painted on glass or if you've never painted on glass, this one might be of interest. For you glass painters, here is another way to use your technique. And for those who have never tried, here is an inexpensive way to learn how. David Porteous is the publisher.

And for you scrapbookers and digital photographers, there's a book for you already on the shelves. Titled Make Your Own Digital Photo Scrapbook. This might be a great help to those of you trying to learn all the tricks of your digital camera; however if you are still holding tight to your 35mm, the book also explains some ideas and techniques that apply to your camera as well. It also then goes on to suggest a number of different decorative ideas as well as just people-picture-taking. Roger Pring and Ivan Hissey, publishers.

It was bound to happen: a craft book about Feng Shui. The exact title of this book is, in fact, Crafting for Good Feng Shui, and it is written by Janice Eaton Kilby. This book explains much of the what, why and how of Feng Shui, and then includes the directions for 40 projects that have been designed to bring harmony to your home. I even found a project in these pages that we had once done on the show and didn't even realize that we were contributing to good Feng Shui!

I had assumed that The Decorated Page, written by Gwen Diehn, was about altered books. Not so. This is a beautiful book about making journals, scrapbooks and albums. There are some interesting ideas here, and it might give you just the push you need when staring at a blank page in any of your albums or journals. Published by Lark Books.

And after the decorated page comes a book titled The Well Decorated Floor. This is another lovely book with fine photographs. I had underestimated the variety of ways that can be used to decorate a floor and make it truly a part of the room. The book was written by Susan Goans Driggers and published by Sterling.

From Nancy Wiseman comes a book that any knitter, whether long time or just learned, might want to add to their library. Titled The Knitter's Book of Finishing Techniques, this book, published by Martingale & Company, contains photographs, drawings and explanations of so many basic steps involved in knitting that every knitter needs to know: casting on (7 different techniques!), binding off, increasing, decreasing, selvage edges, seams, borders, bands, and on and on and on conscience.

Finally for those interested in needlework of a different kind is The Embroidery Stitch Bible, with over 200 stitches photographed, sketched and explained. Betty Barnden gathered all the information together and Krause has published it. It should be mentioned that this is one of several books shown today that was originally published in England but that is now being published and/or distributed in the United States.
