Instructions for this fun and fast quilted wallhanging project were provided courtesy of quilt designer Tom Russell.
Materials and Tools:
Get funky flower vase templates.
10-1/4" x 9-1/4" fabric for background
4-1/2" x 10-1/4" for table
6" x 6-1/2" for flower vase
random fabric scraps for flowers
Inner border fabric
- 3/4 strips: (2) 13 3/4 lengths
- (2) 10 3/4 lengths
Outer border fabric
- 1-3/4" strips: (2) 10-3/4" lengths, (2) 16-1/2" lengths
fusible web
17 x 20 batting
matching thread
Steps:
1. Attach table rectangle to bottom of background rectangle (use 1/4-inch seam allowances).
2. Attach inner borders in this order, top, bottom, left and right. Repeat process for outer border.
3. Transfer vase pattern to paper side of fusible web. Fuse to wrong side of fabric. Cut vase out. Referring to pattern, iron vase into position.
4. Draw flower stems freehand, or place pattern beneath the panel and trace. Cut out flowers. Use a small zigzag or satin-stitch for stem. If you would like you can also do this by hand using a stem-stitch. Depending on your background fabric you may need a stabilizer. Once stems are sewn, use a satin or button hole stitch to go around edges of vase.
5. Repeat step 3 for leaf and flower shapes.
6. Using a zigzag, satin, or button hole stitch, go around all flower elements to secure edges.
7. Layer elements in this order; batting, top (face up), backing (face down). Pin layers together to keep them from shifting.
8. Using your walking foot, straight stitch 1/4 inch in from the edge around the perimeter of the wallhanging. Leave a 4-inch opening to turn the panel inside out. Be sure to back-stitch at the beginning and ending of the opening. Clip corners of panel to remove bulk. Remove pins. Trim batting even with raw edges.Turn inside out. Slip-stitch panel closed.
The wallhanging is now ready to quilt. Because of all the movement in the quilt, simple straight-line quilting is a nice complement.
