Sitting at the end of the bed, the bench provides a tabletop, extra seating and it conceals the dog's crate.

Materials and Tools:

miter saw
jig saw
nail gun
wood glue

For the bench:
one 25"x25"x3/4" piece of birch plywood for the back
two 16"x13-1/2"x3/4" pieces of birch plywood for the sides (two with mitered edge)
two 13-1/2"x25"x3/4" pieces of birch plywood (one with mitered edges for the top and one
with out for the shelf)

For the dog crate cover:
one 26"x36"x3/4" piece of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) for the top
two 3/4"x36"x1-3/4" pieces of pine mitered on one side for skirt (width)
one 3/4"x26"x1-3/4" pieces of pine mitered on both edges for skirt (length)
two 2"x2"x24" pieces of poplar (legs)

Steps:

Bench:

1. Using a jig saw, make a 2"x9-1/2" cut out of the bottom of your two side pieces to create the feet. Make sure the cut is centered.

2. Using a compound miter saw; cut the top of the same pieces at a 45-degree angle.

3. Glue the mitered sides to your mitered top. Make sure they meet at a 90-degree angle. Holding them in place, fasten together with your nail gun (figure A).

Figure B

4. Glue and nail the shelf to the inside of the sides, just above the cut-out for the feet (figure B).

5. Pick one side to be the back of the bench. Glue and then nail your back to it.

6. Set the bench aside to dry.

Dog crate cover:

1. Turn the top piece of the MDF upside down and line up your three skirt pieces on the edges of the MDF.

2. Make sure the mitered edges match up, glue then nail these pieces to the MDF and each other.

3. Fasten the legs with nails and glue to the inside corners where your skirt pieces connect (figure C).

4. Let the piece dry.

Putting it all together:

1. Attach a 3/4"x23-1/2"x3" ledger to the back of the bench 3/4" from the top.

2. Turn the dog crate cover over and rest the edge with no legs onto the ledger. Glue and then nail them together.

3. Stain the piece with green, eco-friendly stain.

4. Glue then nail pieces of pine molding to face of the piece.
