Laurie Eisenhardt, a true creative spirit with an ample green thumb, has always sought to make art a central part of her life. After attaining a degree in painting, she found herself pondering just what exactly she was supposed to do with herself. It was a fellow painting major that urged Eisenhardt to attend a local ceramics class, a simple move that quickly opened up an entirely new avenue of creative expression. Today, Eisenhardt will be making one of her more popular pieces, a clay letter hand painted platter.

Steps:

1. Prepare the slab roller by arranging the canvas and adjusting the depth to determine the thickness of the clay.

2. Slice the clay from the clay loaf with a wire cutter and arrange it in between the two layers of canvas using a mallet to pound it flat enough to be accepted by the rollers (figure A).

3. Roll the clay through the slab roller.

4. Smooth the clay using the rubber kidney.

5. Cut a rectangle of clay large enough to fit the form.
