Keep a goody jar handy for when a family member has something special to celebrate, then let them choose a gift or coupon from the jar. Prize examples are a movie pass or video rental.
Family activities expert Dr. Bra Vada Garrett-Akinsanya offers tips for celebrating family milestones.

  • Mark a special day by hanging a red towel in the bathroom or kitchen to indicate to your family that you are celebrating something. Designate a certain time for making the announcement.

  • Interview family members on each of their birthdays with a video camera. Use the same tape and they'll have a commemorative videotape of all of their comments over the years. Make copies for other family members to enjoy as well.

  • To celebrate the New Year, have each family member write down special milestones they experienced throughout the year in a family journal.

  • Write a special letter to your child each year on their birthday, keep them sealed in a keepsake box, and give it to him or her on his or her 21st birthday.

  • Make sure to take a picture of your child's toothless smile. You could even create a lost-tooth chart (figure A) for your children to share with their friends or siblings.

  • Use an acrylic paint pen and a glass plate to create a special dinner plate for your child's milestones (figure B). Be sure the paint is applied ONLY to the bottom of the plate. Otherwise, it will not be safe for serving food. Use paint remover to remove the paint so that a new one can be made each year.
