Materials and Tools:
freezer paper
sizing
Totally Stable water-soluble stabilizer - Iron the stabilizer to stiffen and pre-shrink. Cover with a piece of fabric or paper to iron.
painters' tape
monofilament thread for the top thread
medium-gray thread for the bottom
fusible web
permanent marker
color marker
straight pins
fabric marking pens
Steps:
1. Trace pattern onto the shiny side of the freezer paper with a sharpie pen. Trace the design onto a piece of totally stable ?shiny side up.
2. Turn over and mark the outside edges with a marker. Number the pieces on the backside (the dull side) of the freezer paper. Put those numbers on either the original pattern or the totally stable. On the backside of the freezer paper make notes as to where to fold and where to leave open.
3. Cut out the freezer paper pieces. If there are many pieces ? work on one section at a time.
4. Iron the pattern pieces to the wrong side of the fabric. Cut out leaving a 1/4-inch seam allowance with 1/2- to one-inch of extra fabric to the outside edges.
5. Spray sizing around the edges that need to be turned under and press them down. Clip where necessary. Spray just the edges.
6. Place the fabric pattern pieces on the master pattern. Hold in place and tape the pieces together. Work on a small area at a time. (In a classroom I iron down the stabilizer. At home I hold the pieces down with a weight — usually the remote from the TV and the VCR.)
7. Sew pieces in place with a narrow short blind stitch. The main part of the stitch is on the fabric that is on the bottom. Bernina set up is center needle, length 1/2 and width 1/2. If your machine has a mirror image it is a big help. If a blind stitch is not available, use a small narrow zigzag instead of a satin stitch.
8. If your machine is programmed so you cannot get a narrow enough stitch you can tell the machine you are using a twin needle and adjust it from there.
9. Remove tape as you are sewing. Stack pieces on top of each other. To be used again and again.
