Candles
Quilled Birthday Elements
Large Candle
1. Base: Twirl a 24-inch strip into a loose coil and shape into a rectangle.

2. Flame: Glue a four-inch strip of orange to the end of an eight-inch strip of yellow. Starting at the orange end, twirl into a loose coil. Pinch one side to form a leaf shape then bend the tip slightly.

3. Finish by gluing the flame to the candle (Figure E).

Balloons
Balloon
1. Balloon: Twirl a 24-inch strip into a loose coil. Leave it round or shape into an egg, a teardrop or an elongated oval.

2. Valve: Fold a 1/2-inch strip in half and glue it to the bottom of the balloon to form an inverted "V."

3. String: The strip for the string can be any desired length. Follow the steps for curling and waving strips from the basic quilling instructions.

4. Finish the balloon: Glue one end of the string strip into the center of the inverted V shape that forms the valve (Figure F).

5. Streamers: Select any length of strip and follow the instructions for curling and waving strips from the basic quilling instructions.

Spiraled Streamers
1. Select any length of strip and wind it around a doll needle in a spiral. When you remove the needle, the paper will maintain the spiral shape.

Confetti
1. Cut strips into tiny squares.

Birthday Cake
1. Cake: Twirl a 24-inch strip into a loose coil and shape into a rectangle. Repeat with a second strip.

2. Frosting Layer: Wind a three-inch strip around a doll needle in a tight spiral (Figure G). Glue this spiral in between the top and bottom layers of the cake. Repeat to make a second spiral. Place the second spiral across the bottom edge of the cake and glue in place (Figure H).

3. Frosting Roses: Make three large frosting roses by twirling three, three-inch strips into tiny loose coils about 1/4 inch in diameter. Make two small frosting roses by twirling two, two-inch strips into loose coils about 1/8 inch in diameter.

4. Candles: follow the candle instructions above but use three-inch strips for the base. Make three.

5. Flames: Glue a one-inch strip of orange to the end of a one-inch strip of yellow. Starting at the orange end, twirl the strip into a loose coil. Shape into a tear drop and then glue the flames to the candles (Figure I).

6. Finish the cake: Glue the frosting roses to the top edge of the cake; place a large one in the center and on each end, glue the small ones in between. Glue the candles to the top of the cake (Figure J).

7. Variation: "Frost" the top of the cake with one large rose in the center, two smaller ones on either side and then make two tiny leaves for either side of the small roses by following the small rose instructions using green and then pinching the tiny loose coils into a leaf shapes.

Large Gift
1. Box: Glue the end of one, 24-inch strip to the end of a second 24-inch strip. Twirl into a loose coil and shape into a square.

2. Ribbon: Place a 1/4-inch strip horizontally just above the center of the square and glue into place. Place a second 1-1/4 inch strip vertically across the center of the square and glue into place.

3. Bow: Glue the ends of a 1-1/2-inch strip together to form a leaf shape. Repeat with a second 1-1/2-inch strip and glue the two leaf shapes together at the points to form a figure 8. This is the bow; glue it to the top of the box. Wave and curl two, two-inch strips and glue one on either side of the box top beneath the bow.

Small Gift
1. Box: Twirl a 24-inch strip into a loose coil and shape into a square (Figure K).

2. Ribbon: Place a 3/4-inch strip horizontally just above the center of the square and glue into place. Place a second 3/4-inch strip vertically across the center of the square and glue into place.

3. Bow: Use a 3-1/2-inch strip to make a series of small loops accordion style (Figure L). Pinch the bottom together and glue it into place on the top of the gift (Figure M).

Ice Cream
1. Cone: Twirl a 12-inch tan strip into a loose coil and shape into a long thin triangle.

2. First Scoop: Twirl an eight-inch strip into a loose coil and shape into a gumdrop. Glue the flat side of the ice cream to the flat side of the triangle.

3. Second Scoop (optional): Twirl a seven-inch strip into a loose coil. Shape into a gumdrop then press in on the flat side of the gumdrop to make a crescent moon shape. Glue this shape onto the top of the first scoop (Figure N).

Party Hat and Decorations
1. Hat: Twirl a 24-inch strip into a loose coil and shape into a triangle.

2. Decorations: Curl, wave and accordion fold 5 or more short, colorful strips into fun shapes and glue them to the point of the hat. You can also use bits of strips cut in half as stripes for the hat or make circles with a hole punch to use as polka dots. Finish the hat by gluing on the decorations (Figure O).

Cupcake
1. Cake: Twirl a 12-inch strip into a loose coil and shape into a gumdrop.

2. Cherry: Twirl a three-inch strip of red into a tight coil.

3. Cup: Accordion fold a 4-1/2-inch strip and glue it to the flat side of the gumdrop shape.

Finish the cup cake by gluing the cherry to the top. You can add "sprinkles" by cutting several colors of paper into very tiny squares and gluing them to the cake
