Birthday Quilling

2. Flame: Glue a four-inch strip of orange to the end of an eight-inch strip of yellow. Starting at the orange end, twirl into a loose coil. Pinch one side to form a leaf shape then bend the tip slightly.

2. Valve: Fold a 1/2-inch strip in half and glue it to the bottom of the balloon to form an inverted "V."

3. String: The strip for the string can be any desired length. Follow the steps for curling and waving strips from the basic quilling instructions.

5. Streamers: Select any length of strip and follow the instructions for curling and waving strips from the basic quilling instructions.

Spiraled Streamers
1. Select any length of strip and wind it around a doll needle in a spiral. When you remove the needle, the paper will maintain the spiral shape.

Confetti
1. Cut strips into tiny squares.

Birthday Cake
1. Cake: Twirl a 24-inch strip into a loose coil and shape into a rectangle. Repeat with a second strip.

3. Frosting Roses: Make three large frosting roses by twirling three, three-inch strips into tiny loose coils about 1/4 inch in diameter. Make two small frosting roses by twirling two, two-inch strips into loose coils about 1/8 inch in diameter.

4. Candles: follow the candle instructions above but use three-inch strips for the base. Make three.

7. Variation: "Frost" the top of the cake with one large rose in the center, two smaller ones on either side and then make two tiny leaves for either side of the small roses by following the small rose instructions using green and then pinching the tiny loose coils into a leaf shapes.

Large Gift
1. Box: Glue the end of one, 24-inch strip to the end of a second 24-inch strip. Twirl into a loose coil and shape into a square.

2. Ribbon: Place a 1/4-inch strip horizontally just above the center of the square and glue into place. Place a second 1-1/4 inch strip vertically across the center of the square and glue into place.

3. Bow: Glue the ends of a 1-1/2-inch strip together to form a leaf shape. Repeat with a second 1-1/2-inch strip and glue the two leaf shapes together at the points to form a figure 8. This is the bow; glue it to the top of the box. Wave and curl two, two-inch strips and glue one on either side of the box top beneath the bow.

2. Ribbon: Place a 3/4-inch strip horizontally just above the center of the square and glue into place. Place a second 3/4-inch strip vertically across the center of the square and glue into place.

Ice Cream
1. Cone: Twirl a 12-inch tan strip into a loose coil and shape into a long thin triangle.

2. First Scoop: Twirl an eight-inch strip into a loose coil and shape into a gumdrop. Glue the flat side of the ice cream to the flat side of the triangle.

Party Hat and Decorations
1. Hat: Twirl a 24-inch strip into a loose coil and shape into a triangle.

Cupcake
1. Cake: Twirl a 12-inch strip into a loose coil and shape into a gumdrop.

2. Cherry: Twirl a three-inch strip of red into a tight coil.

3. Cup: Accordion fold a 4-1/2-inch strip and glue it to the flat side of the gumdrop shape.

Finish the cup cake by gluing the cherry to the top. You can add "sprinkles" by cutting several colors of paper into very tiny squares and gluing them to the cake
