Ask Alex: Hand Quilting With a Hoop

Quilter Dawn Kunkelmann from San Clemente, Calif., has this question for Alex Anderson:

"What is the best way to put a quilt in a hoop for hand quilting? I've used fused PVC quilt hoops that have left ridges in the quilt when I finish quilting a section and take the quilt out of the hoop to move to a different section. I don't have room for a large quilt frame, so if I hand quilt, it has to be with a hoop. Perhaps there are better hoops on the marker, which I am not aware of?"

Alex has this advice:

  • Start with a hoop no larger than an 18 inches. Baste well every four inches.

  • Work from the center out.

  • Baste an extra length of fabric at the top so it doesn't get stretched out when quilting the edges.

  • Place quilt on frame, slide top ring over quilt and tighten.

  • Make sure the top of the quilt is flat and make sure the back fabric is taut as well.

  • With hoop loosened, pat fabric to get the top to the desired looseness.

  • Always take the quilt out of the hoop when not working on it.
