Brand new quilter, Julie Wing-Gapusan, already backed her quilt and had it quilted. Now she's ready for the finishing touch--binding. She doesn't have a roomy place to prepare her large quilt to be bound. Quilting expert Alex Anderson offers binding tips that include squaring up your quilt.

Place a large square ruler along one corner to evenly square up corners.

For small borders use a 6-inch rectangular ruler to square up the edges. For borders that are larger than 6 inches, line up two 6-inch rectangular rulers next to each to ensure accurate measuring. Cut along the edges and move up the quilt to square up.

Cut a 2-1/8-inch binding and fold in half. Sew the binding to the top side, turn over, and sew the binding to the back side.

Don't worry with mitering the corners with your first quilt, sew binding to one side, and then sew the binding to the next side until all four sides are bound.
