Alex's Advice: Machine Oil

Check your manufacturer's recommendations for cleaning and oiling your machine.
Sewing machine oil should be clear. If the oil in your bottle has turned brown, throw it out. The discoloration means the oil has turned rancid.
After oiling your machine, run a scrap of fabric through machine four or five times to make sure there is no residue left on the machine.

If you do get oil residue on your quilt, sprinkle the spot with cornstarch and brush with a soft toothbrush. Let starch sit overnight for full effect.
