If HGTV.com had existed in the 1970s, Sandi and Dave Gibson's bathroom would have been featured as the hottest trend in bathroom design. The tile bathtub, dark woodwork and Hollywood-style lighting were all the rage back then. How things have changed. Thirty years later, this bathroom is a dysfunctional eyesore that these homeowners can't wait to get rid of.

Not only is this bathroom ugly, it is dangerous, unhealthy and impractical. The homeowners find the slippery tile and sharp edges of the bathtub unsafe for their small children. The pecky-cyprus wood paneling that lines the walls is almost impossible to clean. Dirt and dust gathers in its cracks and crevices then irritate the homeowner's allergies. They don't have time to use the big steam shower, so they've turned it into a storage closet. They dislike the water closet; it is claustrophobic and lacks a much-needed ventilation fan. Designer Krista Watterworth and carpenter Steven J. Whittle set out to bring this bathroom into the 21st century with contemporary style and modern amenities.
