In this project, sheets of acrylic are heated, rolled and hung on wire to serve as art and help keep an open floor plan.

Materials and Tools:

¼-inch-thick sheet of brown acrylic glass
¼-inch-thick sheet of blue acrylic glass
3/16-inch-thick sheet of red acrylic glass
small wooden dowel
oven
oven mitts or gloves
cookie sheet covered with aluminum foil
table saw
chop saw
eye hooks
fishing wire
drill with pilot-hole bit
scissors

Note: Use whatever colors, shapes and thicknesses of acrylic you like. If you get anything less than 1/8-inch thick, the acrylic might crack when drilled.

Steps:

1. Using the table saw and chop saw, cut the acrylic into squares and rectangles of the desired size.

2. Heat oven to 400 degrees.

3. Place squares and rectangles on the cookie sheet and bake for about 10 minutes.

4. Wearing the oven mitts or gloves, take the cookie sheet out of the oven and wrap the heated acrylic around a wooden dowel. The acrylic will be hot.

6. Drop the coiled acrylic into cold water. It should harden immediately.

7. Using a pilot-hole bit, drill a hole at the top and bottom of each piece of acrylic. The bottom pieces will have a hole only at the top.

8. Tie fishing wire through each hole to connect pieces of the coiled acrylic. We used 10 on a strand.

9. With the pilot-hole bit, drill small holes in the ceiling where you want to hang each strand.

10. Screw an eye hook into each hole in the ceiling.

11. Hang the strands of coiled acrylic from each hook.
